1. It acts as the engine's "messenger."

In common hybrid system designs, the internal combustion engine (ICE) is usually not directly connected to the wheels, but rather to a planetary gear set. In many classic layouts, the ICE is connected to the planetary carrier, while the sun gear is connected to a generator. Although they are not directly "welded" together, through the meshing of the gears, every rotation of the engine directly affects the state of the sun gear.

2. Regulating the engine's "breathing."

The sun gear acts as a regulating valve here. When the internal combustion engine (ICE) is working, the power it generates is divided into two parts:
One part is transmitted through the sun gear to the generator to generate electricity;
The other part is transmitted to the wheels to drive the vehicle. Because the sun gear can rotate freely or have its speed controlled by the motor, it acts like a continuously variable transmission, allowing the engine to always operate at the most comfortable and fuel-efficient pace.

3. Helping to start the engine.

When you're ready to drive and the internal combustion engine (ICE) hasn't started yet, the system will first make the motor connected to the sun gear rotate. Through the rotation of the sun gear, it will drive the entire mechanism to "wake up" the engine. Therefore, the sun gear is also an important helper in starting the engine.

4. Enabling "each to do its own thing."

The magic of the sun gear is that it decouples the internal combustion engine and the wheels (meaning they are not rigidly bound together).
Even if the car is stationary, the internal combustion engine can still drive the generator through the sun gear to charge the battery.
This flexible connection method relies entirely on the sun gear acting as a mediator, coordinating the power flow.
